Art and Design is a wonderfully exciting, rewarding and enriching subject. Our aim is to provide an environment which nurtures and actively encourages creativity and talent. Practical work is developed through an ethos of praise and constructive dialogue between student and teacher and all students will experience a wide range of media, techniques and processes as they grow and develop their skills at each Key Stage.

MIA

Moving Image Arts is an exciting and interesting introduction into the world of film making. Offered at GCSE and A Level, MIA allows students to take full control of their work and become, a Script Writer, Cameraman, Lighting Engineer, Sound Engineer and Director.

It can be said that no art or communication form is as influential, powerful or prolific in the modern era as the art of Moving Images. From film and television programming to advertising and web streaming, it’s a medium that resonates with people because its combination of all other art forms (performance, visual, physical, musical, lyrical, textual) most closely approximates the limitless creativity of our own dreams.

At Key Stage 3 pupils will explore all the key areas of Art and Design and develop their skills using a range of media, processes and techniques, working in both 2D, 3D, Fine Art and Design through a thematic approach.

Course Outline

This course is divided into two components.

Component 1, Part A: Exploratory Portfolio

The focus of the Exploratory Portfolio is to encourage students to develop their ability to experiment with a wide range of techniques and processes. This will take the format of workshops that teach specific skills in a variety of media, materials, processes and technologies. Students are encouraged to be creative, innovative and reflective, refining their ideas as the work progresses.

Component 1, Part B: Investigating the Creative and Cultural Industries

Students complete one of the following practical tasks.

An investigation into an artist, designer, movement leading to a personal response.
A response to a design brief.

Students build on the knowledge, skills and confidence gained in Component 1.

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment

CCEA release the stimulus paper at the beginning of January of the examination year. Students complete preparatory work and a final outcome.

Assessment

There are 4 assessment objectives:

AO1: develop their ideas through sustained and focused investigations;

AO2: refine their ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes;

AO3: record ideas, observations and insights;

AO4: present a personal response/outcome in the areas of Fine Art or Design.

Coursework

Both components provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate and communicate artistic interests, visual curiosity, creativity and personal skills in art, craft and design. They select the work that reflects their ability and personal achievement in relation to the assessment objectives for this course. This includes evidence of observations from primary and secondary sources and work that displays a breadth of experience in a range of media.

Study/Homework Requirements:

Students are expected to spend three hours per week on their preparatory work under the guidance of the teacher. Specific targets will be set each week and a log retained by both student and teacher.

Key Points To Success:

Students must be focused and hardworking in order to achieve. They must develop their creative, intellectual and artistic abilities; develop their personal knowledge and understanding; and develop skills including investigating, realising, experimenting and problem-solving.

Students must avail of the extra classes on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Course Outline

Pupils following this course complete two units in AS and two units in A2.

Unit AS1 – Experimental Portfolio on a theme that is issued in a stimulus paper at the beginning of the AS course.

Unit AS2 – Personal Response on the same theme with an outcome.

Unit A21 – Personal and Critical Investigation

Unit A22 – Thematic Portfolio and Outcome

Assessment

There are four assessment objectives –

AO1: Knowledge and Understanding.
AO2: Creative Process
AO3: Skills
AO4: Outcome

Coursework

Unit AS1 – Pupils will present a portfolio of work on a theme that is issued in September. It is designed to give pupils space to be creative and develop essential skills, techniques and processes.

Unit AS2 – Pupils respond to the theme issued. It includes developing work into an outcome that stems from the research and exploratory work completed for Unit AS1.

Unit A21 – Pupils work to a theme that is issued in September and build an experimental portfolio of work which includes a written response.

Unit A22 – Pupils will develop the theme into an outcome.

Study/Homework Requirements:

Pupils are expected to spend 10 hours per week on their preparatory work under the guidance of the teacher.

Specific targets will be discussed and set with the pupil each week and a record/log will be kept by the pupil and teacher.

Key Points To Success:

Pupils must be focused and hardworking in order to achieve. They must develop their creative, intellectual and artistic abilities; develop their personal knowledge and understanding; and develop skills including investigating, realising, experimenting and problem-solving. In order to obtain the highest grades, students must devote extra time.

Pupils must avail of the extra classes on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
