St Mary’s past pupil Paul McMahon has been nominated for the 2022 Irish Poem of the Year.
Paul now lives in Cork and is also a successful playwright and musician. He won the Keats-Shelley Poetry Prize in 2015. He studied Creative Writing in NUI Galway and has previously lived in Switzerland, Prague, London and Berlin.
Growing up he was introduced to poetry by his father. In school he was inspired by English teacher Dermot Campfield who he fondly recalls passionately reciting Death of a Naturalist by Seamus Heaney at the top of the classroom before explaining the intricacies of the poem to the class.
