Actor Marty Rea

10th January 2023

Former St Mary’s science teacher Dan Tracey with actor, and past pupil, Marty Rea, reunited at the recent production of “The Weir” at the Abbey Theatre Dublin in which Marty starred.

Marty, who left St Mary’s in 1997, received a Lady Rothermere Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.

Subsequently, he has won three Irish Times Theatre awards. He won twice in the Best Actor category for ‘Hamlet’ in 2011; and for his Richard II (Druid Shakespeare) performance in 2016 while his third award was for Best Supporting Actor for ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘King of the Castle’ in 2018.

Marty commented,

“The St Mary’s school shows that Marie McQuillan and Dan Tracey produced played a very important role in my life, giving me the confidence to forge ahead with the dream of being an actor, but also instilling in me the strong work ethic which is invaluable for a career in the theatre.”

The Weir runs in the Abbey Theatre until January 14th.
