A welcome from the Principal

Principal Mr Brendan McComb introduces the prospectus with a clear vision: St Mary’s is the only boys’ grammar school in West Belfast, committed to exceptional pastoral care, outstanding teaching and learning, and strong community links.
He emphasises high expectations, wrap‑around academic support and a deep partnership with parents to help every pupil realise his full potential.

Ethos, history and values

Founded in 1866 by the Christian Brothers, St Mary’s has a long tradition of academic excellence, social justice and service to the local community.
Our ethos is shaped by the Edmund Rice Schools Trust Charter and the core values of Trust, Respect and Equality, which permeate school life.

Facilities and future developments

Pupils benefit from modern classrooms, specialist Science, Art, Technology, Music and ICT rooms, a 200‑seat lecture theatre, drama theatre and dedicated Sixth Form study facilities.
The prospectus outlines plans for a new state‑of‑the‑art Sports Centre, adding a large multi‑purpose sports hall, fitness suite, dance/drama space and improved access to our grass pitches.

Learning, support and pathways

The curriculum at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 is broad, balanced and tailored, with standardised assessments and tracked progress to support personalised pathways to GCSE, A level, university and apprenticeships.
Exceptional pastoral care, a dedicated Learning Support Hub and specialist AEN provision ensure that pupils with additional needs are fully included and supported.

Extra-curricular, leadership and destinations

St Mary’s offers a rich extra‑curricular programme in sport, music, arts, STEM, social justice, eco initiatives and student leadership, with pupils encouraged to be active Simmarian’s within and beyond the classroom.
The prospectus highlights strong leaver destinations, with most students progressing to universities, including Queen’s, Ulster, and other Russell Group institutions, as well as higher-level apprenticeships with leading employers.
