Skype Call With Edmund Rice Schools in Sydney

21st March 2017

Earlier this term, St Mary’s CBGS hosted a Skype video call with fellow Edmund Rice schools in Australia, to allow the pupils of St Mary’s to find out about life in Australia and to find out what a Christian Brothers’ school is like on the other side of the world.

Mr Herron, who leads the Social Justice Advocacy Group, organised this event with Sean Brannan from St Pius X College in Chatswood, Sydney.

Four members of the Social Justice Advocacy Group and members of the St Vincent de Paul and Senior Prefect Team were present. We asked the Australian student leaders questions about what life is like in a Christian Brothers School and how they felt being part of the Edmund Rice network of schools stood them apart from other schools. The pupils of the Australian schools asked us a question which made us laugh, ‘’Is Conor McGregor a big deal in Ireland?’’

Mr Herron met Mr Sean Brannan and another Principal present, Mr Mark Bonnici when representing the school at the Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders Congress in Johannesburg, South Africa and Kolkata, India. Today’s exchange truly went beyond borders and showed how the Social Justice issues being tackled by our students in our society are no different to what ER students in Australia are doing.

We had a lot of fun Skyping with the schools and learnt a lot about life in Australia and what it was like to be part of an Edmund Rice school there. We hope that this will strengthen the bond between our schools and allow us to broaden our minds to different cultures. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Australian schools for taking time out of their busy day to Skype with us.
