The Homeless Project was set up in September 2011 to assist various Belfast organisations who work with rough sleepers. Initially the project was more about raising awareness rather than fundraising. However, our annual collection of toiletries, non-perishable food, and winter clothing has proven to be extremely successful to date.
Every November as winter approaches, we begin our annual winter woollies campaign. This is a whole school initiative in which all students are encouraged to bring in one item of clothing to school eg. gloves, hats, socks. These items are then transported to the Welcome Organisation Outreach Team, who drive through the streets of Belfast until midnight each day, providing rough sleepers with additional clothing and food to help them to keep warm and make it through the night.
Most recently, we have established a link with the Simon Community Homelessness Prevention Officer, who attends the school regularly to provide information sessions and workshops to students in each year group, raising awareness of the reality of homeless and possible prevention strategies.
