The Homeless Project was set up in September 2011 to assist various Belfast organisations who work with rough sleepers. Initially the project was more about raising awareness rather than fundraising. However, our annual collection of toiletries, non-perishable food, and winter clothing has proven to be extremely successful to date.
The Pope John Paul II Award was established in St. Mary’s in September 2010. Initially 2 students took part in the programme, achieving gold and bronze awards. Since then our numbers have grown significantly and 18 students are currently participating in the award in Year 13.
In preparation for Mandela Day (5th May 2016), 10D worked on projects describing Mandela’s early life, work, arrest and presidency. This date also marks the feast of Blessed Edmund Rice and the pupils were able to draw comparisons between Nelson Mandela and Edmund Rice’s concern for the oppressed as part of their Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders (EREBB) work.
